Today my son…

cleaning toilets…is gonna have to learn the value of a dollar.   Riley had this happen last year…end of the summer…the novelty of swimmng everyday and not having the structure of school wears off and he becomes an absolute brat bored.  How does this show up?  He becomes completely ornary (is that a word?).  He argues about everything.  he talks back.  He threatens to run away.   Then he comes downstairs after a time out with a note to tell me that he has to have a fishing rod by next week to participate in the special sessions that the daycare has on Wednesday mornings.  Oh yeah…and the counselor said that Walmart has them for $10.  There was a huge amount of disbelief that I would not rush right out today to buy a fishing pole.  Then, you should have heard the wailing about how hard life was and how rotten I was.  I told him he could do some extra chores around the house and I would “pay” him for it.

“NO WAY…THAT WOULD BE LIKE 10 THINGS I HAD TO DO AROUND THE HOUSE!!!”  wail…wail…wail…I’m running away…I NEED a fishing pole or else I won’t be able to do fishing!!!! It literally took 15 minutes of wailing and complaining about things before he could think of anything he might do except complain.  Then, he said he would clean up outside.  He did a great job and so he got a $1 for that.  After 20 minutes of cleaning up outside, he came inside and asked what he could do.  I suggested he clean the pit of the boys bathroom.  He looked at me like I had 3 heads…YOU MEAN THE TOILET TOO????

Yup, the toilet too.

“What can I clean it with …Lysol?…isn’t that poison?

Well, we found a nontoxic cleaner and he is up there doing it now…he asked for $2 for that and …well, I think I’ll give it to him if it is cleaned in any way…really anything is better than nothing.
